Kenneth Gilbert-How I Made It in Baseball

Brandon Brooks-How I Made It in Baseball

What were your athletic goals in High School?

·         Hit for a high batting average

·         Play excellent defense

·         Steal as many bases as possible

Did you play college or pro baseball?

Yes.
I went to Hill College for 2 years and played CF/RF my second year.

In the fall of ’09 I transferred to Prairie View A&M University. That’s where I currently play outfield; this is my senior year.

As you look back on your high school career, what were some of the keys that led to you being able to play college baseball?

Playing year around. Of course it’s good to play for your team but finding a good summer team to play on helps as well; especially if the coach has connections with college coaches/pro scouts.

I was surrounded by others who had the same goals in mind. All of my closest friends were on the baseball team, that’s one of the big things we had in common. When you surround yourself with others who want to head in the same direction as you it will help you to stay focused.

What is your advice to young baseball players who desire to play college and/or pro baseball?

Give it your all. Play the best you can play and don’t leave the field thinking you could have done more.

Use wisdom. There are a lot of choices that you can make right now…some good, some bad. The college/pro baseball life comes with its challenges as well, and there are good ways of handling those challenges and bad ways of handling them. Be swift to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry when those challenges come your way. Don’t make foolish decisions that could jeopardize your future opportunities.

Seek the Lord. Open your Bible and read it. Get a good understanding of God’s Word and it will guide you in the right direction.

What are some of your most memorable tournaments you competed in between the ages of 12-18?

One of the best tournaments I competed in was the Team USA tournament in Puerto Rico. We had great team chemistry and good coaches; the combination of these two helped us to be successful. Team bonding on and off of the field made the trip memorable. Its a pretty cool thing to play a a couple of games with your teammates then head to the beach later on and play football.

I believe it was the same way with my other most memorable tournament which was the Perfect Game tournament in Georgia. When you mix cool teammates, good game play and good chemistry together it makes for a pretty memorable time. I'd say with this trip and with all of the other trips I've been on I've grown by experience.

By that I mean experiencing such good and diverse competition. Playing against good competition (I believe) gave me an advantage once I got to college because a lot of the talent I saw; I was already used to seeing, which helped boost my confidence.
